The Training Unit is responsible for addressing the training needs of all 600+ personnel in the Agency. It maintains records, schedules training sessions, and manages the Denton County Firearms Training Facility. The Unit audits all certified personnel and provides notifications about training requirements for licensing and compliance.

The training team includes a Captain, a Lieutenant, a Training Coordinator with the rank of Sergeant, three Training Deputies, and a Rangemaster. The Unit conducts multiple state-mandated courses, such as the Basic County Corrections Course, which certifies new Detention Officers. In addition to this, it offers classes that surpass state requirements. The Unit also provides law enforcement-related continuing education for career development and maintaining professional standards. It offers educational opportunities to help staff improve their skills and certifications.

The Unit monitors the field training of new Peace Officers, Detention Officers, and Communications Officers. The Rangemaster oversees the operation of the firearms training facility.

The Denton County Sheriff’s Office Firearms Range is used by various law enforcement agencies for firearms training and qualifications, including rifles, shotguns, pistols, and less-lethal munitions.
